ARE YOUR CHILDREN LOSING FOCUS OR GETTING DISTRACTED DURING ENGLISH CLASSES?
Children get restless easily whenever they are told to sit still for a long time. This results in them being less attentive during class hours, especially in language classes. Hence, to solve the problem, fun activities and English language games are introduced in the classroom to make learning interesting and exciting!

YES/NO
This is a great game that lets kids practice their interrogative skills. They can also improve their way of answering a question and giving various creative answers.
The game rules are simple – Choose one student to the front of the class. Other students have to ask them questions – one at a time! – to get them to answer yes/no. The teacher can set a maximum time limit for each session. The chosen student cannot use the word yes/not or repeat a phrase in their native language. Whoever lasts the longest wins.
Through the game, children are able to practice their English at the comprehensive level where they peruse their ability to use English correctly. This could further help students prepared for their PSLE or O-level’s comprehension papers.
BOARD RACE
Another simple game that teachers can conduct in their classroom. Board racing is a fun game that allows students to revise their vocabulary. This is also a way for teachers to test the knowledge level of students.
Rules – the number of players is at least 6 or more.
Split the class into two teams (or more, depending on the class size) and give each team(s) a marker. Draw a line in the middle of the board and write the topic. The game takes the form of a relay race as students take turns writing as many words as required. It must be related to the given topic. Each correct word will earn one point; misspelt or unreadable words are disqualified.
The best thing about this game is that it is appropriate for all levels and ages! It can boost students’ vocabulary bank which contributes to their English writing paper.
HANGMAN
We definitely won’t forget one of the most classic games and an all-time favourite for students. This is a fun game to start the lesson or if you have some leftover time at the end of the class. The instructions are simple as follows:
Pick a word and draw dashes according to the number of letters in the word.
Have the students guess the letters. If it’s correct, write it in the correct spaces. If it’s wrong, begin drawing the image of a hanging man.
Continue until the word (they win) or the image (you win) is completed.
Benefit – students get to improve their spelling which comes in handy when they’re sitting for their PSLE or O-level English papers
PRINTABLE BOARD GAMES
If your child or student has a more introverted personality, we recommend getting them comfortable first. Then, have them work on something fun in pairs using these printable board games. You can find many options online, such as crocodile board games, bingo, dice questions, snakes and ladders board games.
These fun board games can help the students practice their vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure. Monitor the students and guide them when they make a mistake.
This has a direct impact on the more introverted kids such that they are able to develop their oratorically skills, hence making them more confident during their oral examinations.
WOULD YOU RATHER?
This is a decision-making game to get students speaking about what they would rather do in given situations. It is a great way of encouraging young learners to think on their feet and prepare them for oral exams.
How to play:
- Divide the students into groups (depending on the number).
- Give each group a copy of the board game, a set of cards and two counters.
- Shuffle the cards and place them face down in a pile next to the board.
- Split each group into two teams and set the counters on the start square.
- Each student will take a turn picking up a card and reading the question aloud.
- Both teams have to discuss the question with their partner and race the other team to make an agreed decision. They must give a justified reason for their answer.
- The first team who answers with a grammatically correct response and justified reason will win. The winning team can move their counter two spaces forward.
- If the team makes a grammar mistake or gives an unjustified reason, the other team can steal the win by creating a more suitable response.
- The first team to reach the finish wins the game.
This game doubles as a grammar game as students must give a grammatically correct answer!
One of the benefits is that students get to think out of the box for creative answers which contributes to their oral communication skills as they are expected to engage in a conversation on a relevant topic during their oral exam. Students also get to practice their grammar which is essential for 3/4 of their PSLE/O-level English papers.
KAHOOT
The best interactive game for audiovisual learning, reviews and assessments!
The School of Language and Communication (SLC) classes often implement Kahoot sessions in their lessons – acting as an icebreaker before their lesson or an assessment after class ends. The teachers are able to gain a better grasp of the students’ level which enables them to plan for more comprehensive lessons.
Teachers can simply use any pre-prepared quizzes according to their preference and share the join code with their students. Or, they can customized their own quizzes.
Either way, it is easiest game to boost students’ engagement with their learning materials as well as testing their understanding of the lesson.
