Knows the words, misses the meaning
An answer repeats a sentence without explaining what it implies.
Teaching focus
Locate evidence, explain the link to the question, then check whether the answer fully responds.
P1–P6 foundations and PSLE preparation. S1–S4 support for G2 and G3, with teaching adapted to your child.
Every learner starts from a different place. We begin by understanding your child's needs, then discuss the level, format and learning support that best fits their next step.

The assessment tables below help you see what your child is working towards. They cover the labelled PSLE, Higher Chinese or SEC G3 paper. For G2 learners, we adjust the teaching and practice to their subject requirements.
A child may speak English confidently yet struggle to explain an inference, shape a composition around a topic, or adapt a message for its reader. These are different learning needs. We look at the work behind the score so that vocabulary practice, reading instruction and writing feedback have a clear purpose.

An answer repeats a sentence without explaining what it implies.
Locate evidence, explain the link to the question, then check whether the answer fully responds.
Interesting language cannot rescue a story that drifts away from the topic.
Plan the central event and turning point, then revise for relevance, paragraph flow and sentence accuracy.
A child gives a view but cannot develop it beyond one sentence.
Practise an opinion, a reason and a relevant personal example, followed by a natural response to a follow-up question.
Ask “Which part of the text made you think that?” rather than only checking whether the answer is right. Progress includes clearer explanations and better revisions, not just longer answers.
The move from primary to secondary English asks for more than a larger vocabulary. Students need to explain how language affects a reader, separate a writer’s point from supporting detail and sustain a coherent viewpoint. These demands can expose gaps even in students who previously scored well.
| Component | Weight / marks | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Writing | 35% | 1 h 50 min; editing, situational and continuous writing (composition) |

| Listening · Home practice; not taught at SLC | 10% | About 45 min |
| Oral communication | 20% | Planned video response and spoken interaction |

Naming a technique does not explain the impression it creates in context.
Work from a precise quotation to its connotations and the reader’s likely understanding.
The learner keeps examples that illustrate a point instead of identifying the point itself.
Separate claims from illustrations, group related ideas and practise concise paraphrasing.
An essay states several views without supporting or linking them.
Build a paragraph around a claim, a relevant example and an explanation of why the example matters.
Discuss a short article together. Ask which claim is convincing and what evidence would strengthen it. Progress includes sharper reasoning and purposeful revision, not ornate vocabulary alone.
Bring a recent marked assignment, your child’s level and any teacher feedback to the programme discussion. We can use these to identify whether the priority is understanding, expression, application or independent working.
Look for a repeated error pattern and ask the learner to explain a response. One low score alone does not show the cause.
CBC offers structured coaching; BBTP offers targeted practice. Discuss the appropriate subject and components before choosing the combination.
Useful review questions include: can the child explain the method, revise the answer and apply the learning to a fresh task with less prompting?
Try the questions above with your child. Their explanation often tells you more than the final answer and helps us decide what to work on next.

We teach G2 alongside G3, adapting explanations, task difficulty, pacing and feedback to G2 students’ needs. We aim to strengthen confidence at school while building towards the SEC examinations early—not by rushing through harder papers, but by making challenging learning manageable.
Begin with the learner’s actual G2 syllabus, current schoolwork and recurring gaps. Break a task into clear steps and model the reasoning before independent practice.
Use carefully selected G3-level material where it deepens a shared skill. Add prompts, worked examples or vocabulary support; reduce support as understanding becomes more secure.
Look for clearer explanations, fewer repeated errors and more independent responses to new tasks. Prepare progressively for SEC demands while protecting time to consolidate learning.
English: move from a supported inference to an independently explained answer, or revise a modelled paragraph before writing for a new audience.
The Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) replaces the former GCE O-Level and N-Level examinations. G3 follows the former O-Level standard, while G2 follows the former N(A)-Level standard. We teach G2 students alongside G3 with extra guidance, a suitable pace and more challenging practice when they are ready. Lessons build school confidence while preparing each student for their own subject level.
