H1 Chinese: make each lesson count

We begin with recent school work. Is the difficulty understanding the passage, finding the right words, developing an argument or speaking under time pressure? Lessons target that gap and give the student a clear way to practise between sessions.

Composition: develop more than an example

The H1 paper includes narrative, explanatory and argumentative writing. We work on a clear focus, relevant detail and the reasoning between ideas. A useful example should support the point—not replace the explanation.

Language use, comprehension and summary

Read authentic material with attention to context, inference and the writer’s purpose. Practise choosing words that fit, explaining answers in your own Chinese and condensing key ideas without changing the meaning.

Video report and oral discussion

A familiar secondary-school approach may not be enough: H1 asks for a short report followed by discussion. We practise selecting a central point, organising supporting ideas and responding to a new question without falling back on a memorised script.

Current issues, useful Chinese

Explore culture, relationships and change through accessible articles and discussion. Students build the vocabulary to explain a position, consider another perspective and use relevant material in composition and oral work.

Know what the paper asks

The assessment includes writing, reading, oral communication and Listening Comprehension. The table separates exam components from the components we teach.
