For Parents Watching Their Child Fall Behind Despite Everything
Is P4 Chinese Becoming Your Child’s Biggest Struggle?
Our Students Jump 2 Grades in 8 Weeks Without Tears, Burnout, or Weekend Stress
Primary 4 is a streaming year. This is the level where schools begin sorting students based on subject performance into different ability groups. Chinese tuition becomes not just about passing exams, but about preparing your child for Upper Primary and Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) success.
At this point, students are already taking weighted assessments and end-of-year exams, with more advanced question types introduced. These include table-based comprehension questions (表格题), note-taking questions (便条), rearrangement questions (重整题) and critique-based questions (评价题). Composition writing also requires more length, depth and structure, especially for Higher Chinese students, in preparation for P5 and P6 / PSLE Picture Composition (看图作文) with 6-box pictures ending with a question mark.
Whether your goal is to get your child to qualify for Higher Chinese, stay competitive, or regain lost confidence, Primary 4 is the best time to make sure they are on track.
Why Primary 4 Is a High-Stakes Year
Primary 4 exam results determine which class your child will be placed in for Primary 5. Well-informed parents like you all know that there are one or two “not so secret top classes” in Primary 5 where the most competent and experienced teachers are sent to teach, and all Primary 5 teachers typically follow students through to Primary 6 to maximise the schools‘ chances of producing the best results. This decision can influence your child’s access to Higher Chinese, subject-based banding (SBB), and even Direct School Admission (DSA) opportunities in the future.
At the same time, the academic jump from P3 to P4 is significant. Students are now expected to:
- Write longer, more descriptive compositions with well developed paragraphs that flow naturally from one to another
- Analyse visual and written texts
- Construct full paragraph answers for comprehension with strategic use of high frequency exam keywords
- Respond to new oral topics with clear reasoning and elaboration
- Memorise and apply a large number of vocabulary words and phrases in different contexts
Many students who did well in lower primary may start to struggle here. Others begin to show signs of burnout or resistance to Chinese altogether. This is where expert support and timely intervention can make a big difference.
